OLIVER HILL

PROFILE | ARTWORK | EXHIBITIONS

Oliver Hill is a Melbourne based artist whose practice is concerned with the interdependent relationship between opposing extremes. Through observation of the environment and its inhabitants, Hill argues for an appreciation of the complete spectrum, stating that in order to thoroughly enjoy the positive things in life, we must also form an appreciation for the negative. One must have experienced pain in order to feel the full extent of joy. One can not recognise perfection without an understanding of imperfection. These opposing extremes are the foundations of balance, the essence of diversity and the prerequisite to variety.

Through the subtle utilisation of colour, form and texture, Hill’s abstract sculptural works allude to the abundant range of polarities found in our environment, be it in regards to nature, the social and political realms, the mind, etc. Balance is not only the driving force behind Hill’s practice, it is an integral part of his thought process in regards to life in general.
